Battle of the Luu Siblings: Who Will Reign Supreme in the Ultimate Cook-Off?

The other day, my brother and I decided to spice things up with a cook-off, and I thought, why not stream it? Both of us love cooking and experimenting with food, so a little friendly competition was the perfect way to showcase our culinary skills—and entertain the chat. Also, then I could force my brother to actually hang out with me mwahahah.

The Challenge: Anything Salmon!

We set the stakes high with a challenge centered around a protein we agreed on: salmon. The rules were simple: each of us had to create a dish featuring salmon, withOUT a recipe and a time limit of an hour and a half. Once the dishes were ready, the judges would evaluate each based on two criteria: appearance and taste, scoring each out of 10. Let’s meet the judges:

With over 26 years of experience in cooking for her hungry children with exquisite taste (us). Her specialty is Vietnamese cuisine and she’s perfected dishes like Bun Bo Hue, Pho, and Com Ga. First, we have MOM.

Not only did she feed us, but our second judge has been eating her food before we were born. His taste buds have been trained and he even dabbles in cooking when she can’t. His best dish is a not so basic fried egg, but I won’t share his secret ingredients. Next, is DAD.

Our final judge is much younger than the others, but don’t underestimate his abilities to judge. One of his favorite foods to make and eat when there’s no food at home are eggs and rice. He’s also currently bulking so you can assume this man came ready to feast. Meet JACOB.

My Dish: Salmon Rice Bowl

I knew I had to play to my audience, so I went with an Asian-inspired dish. I baked and seared a salmon fillet, glazed with a sweet and spicy gochujang mixture, topped with sesame seeds. To round out the dish, I served it over rice with a side of cucumber, crab salad, and avocado for balance ✨

My Brother’s Dish: Caramelized Onion Topped Salmon

My brother took a different approach with his dish. He prepared salmon topped with caramelized onions, served atop a bed of creamy mashed potatoes. The sweetness of the onions paired with the richness of the salmon was a classic combination, and he plated it beautifully, ensuring everything looked as appetizing as it tasted. What a perfectionist 🙄

The Verdict

After the scores were tallied, we got the final results:

Han’s Totals

  • Appearance: 25/30

  • Taste Test: 26/30

Bill’s Totals

  • Appearance: 24.5/30

  • Taste Test: 26/30

Just by 0.5 points, Han took the W and the crown. The competition was fierce, but ultimately, it was just for fun… What should our next challenge be?? 🤔
